Foot-O at Soft Rock Recreation Area

A forecast calling for wind storms and freezing rain did not stop 28 hardy orienteers from racing around the spectacular rocky slopes of Soft Rock Recreation Area outside of Corvallis today. The day started with the event officials' tent blowing over and snapping into several pieces, but things got better from there. Those who braved the elements were rewarded with a fantastic day in the woods. Course setter Jan Lauenstein designed courses that offered participants a great mix of technical rocky terrain and faster running out in the sage-covered flats. Loy Koch and Miranda Marks were the fastest on the competitive Advanced Beginner course; Correena Streets won the Beginner course; and Leslie, Emi, and Cassie Berg had the best time on Intermediate.

As usual, we'd like to acknowledge our volunteers, without whose help our events would not be possible. Kat Franchino and Grace Foster helped with setup (and broken tent disposal); Loy Koch and Chris Caldwell picked up controls and helped with cleanup; and Jan Lauenstein designed courses and helped hang and pick up controls.

We would also like to thank the Loose Caboose for agreeing to continue supporting Grizzly Orienteering for another year!

Up next is a double-header of events at Blue Mountain on December 3 and Lubrecht Experimental Forest on December 4. Hope to see you there!
