Lone Pine State Park

Spring has finally arrived in Montana. It was a spectacular day for orienteering in the Flathead, as we returned to Lone Pine State Park outside Kalispell. Thanks to Montana State Parks for continued collaboration and support of orienteering!

Over 60 people attended today's event, including a mix of local newcomers and a strong contingent of GrizO members from Missoula who made the trek to Kalispell today. We apologize to those of you who were affected by the snafu with control #47, which was not out in the terrain when you got to its location. This was corrected during the event. If you were impacted by this, you can attend your next GrizO event for free. Just let us know!

There were some strong performances on all the courses, which provided both technical and physical challenges on the steep Lone Pine mountainsides. On the Advanced course, Missoula Youth Program coach Calvin Olson took a strong second place, just a few minutes ahead of very talented young Kalispell orienteer Liam Browne. On Advanced Beginner, Mox Anderson was fastest, ahead of the group of first-timers Isaac, Will, and Otto. The Intermediate course was won by Zeke Campfield. One of our local Flathead volunteers, Steve Varro, finished second. The Darin Rashleigh group had the fastest time on the Beginner course.

BA huge thank you to Harvey Goldstein, who took on event directing and course setting for this event. Boris Granovskiy designed the courses and helped with logistics. Harry Morgan helped with registration and hanging controls. Steve Varro helped with hanging and collecting controls. Jesse Nelson and Loy Koch took on the bulk of beginner instruction. Mox Anderson, Calvin Olson, Loy Koch, Harry Morgan, and Steve Varro picked up controls. Thanks to all the volunteers!

Our next event is at Lubrecht Experimental Forest on May 13. Rumor has it that Mountain Bike Orienteering COurses will be offered in addition to Foot Orienteering. We hope to see you then!
