Flathead Weekend: Lion Mountain

Day 2 of GrizO's Flathead Weekend was a free event held at Lion Mountain as a partnership with Whitefish Legacy Partners (WLP) on a map originally created by Will Dickinson and updated in the spring of 2025 by Euell, Liam, and Kara Browne.

WLP used their vast contact list to attract around 50 first-timers to the event! GrizO volunteers were on hand in full force to conduct beginner instruction and walk first-timers around an Intro course before sending them out into the woods on their own.

By all accounts, most newcomers, as well as GrizO veterans, had a great time exploring the beautiful woods of Lion Mountain in a new way. Many newcomers did great, and some even went out on a second course after finishing their first one. Particularly impressive was Seth King, who flew around the Intermediate course in the fastest time of the day.

We hope to come back to this and other venues in the Kalispell/Whitefish area in the future. If you are from the area and would like to get involved in growing orienteering in the Flathead, let us know!

Thank you to our friends from WLP for making this happen. especially Haley King and Cynthia Ingelfinger!

A huge thank-you to the Browne family for taking on the organization of the event, including course setting, event directing, and map updates!

Thanks also to our beginner instructors and control collectors, including Allison Brown, Calvin Olson, Ben Conley, Zariah Zosel, Kate DeBlonk, Kathleen Dent, Boris Granovskiy.

Next up, join us at Lubrecht on May 11 for a foot-O!
