Soft Rock

We could not have wished for a finer fall day in the Bitterroot for this event. Calvin Olson designed a set of fun and challenging courses that took advantage of the updated map of Soft Rock, our premier and most technically difficult venue. Competitors faced a mixture of open sage-covered prairie and intricate hillsides, covered with cliffs and boulders. Those who could accurately find the passages between all the clusters of rock were rewarded with the satisfaction of hitting controls straight on, while many others spent a lot of time relocating on the unforgiving slopes.

GrizO Youth Program participants showed off their skills by taking the top three spots on the Intermediate course, with Finn Nowels finishing first ahead of his brother Oliver. Kelli Fry took the 3rd spot.

Kat Franchino ran two courses and won them both - Short Advanced and Beginner. Ron and Melissa Owens won Advanced Beginner ahead of Kara Browne. On the Long Advanced course, Boris Granovskiy held off the UM orienteering stars to take the win ahead of Ben Brady.

As usual, we have a great team of volunteers to thank for making this event happen. Emily Johnson was the event director. Calvin Olson designed and set the courses, and did some beginner instruction. Siri Christopherson put out and collected flags. Kelli Fry, Liam Browne, Euell Browne, Ben Brady, and Kate DeBlonk collected controls. Finally, Zariah Zosel led a walkthrough of part of the Intermediate course, explaining her thinking process to a group of orienteers looking to improve.
