Soft Rock Foot-O

This event is dedicated to the memory of Eugene Granovskiy (6/25/1940-10/14/2023).

Over 70 people attended the premiere of the new map of Soft Rock Recreation Area that was completed by Jon Campbell over the summer. Chris Cadlwell's courses challenged the participants both physically and technically, combining sections that went through the wide-open sage fields that allowed for fast running and intricate cliffs and rock formations requiring precise navigation.

Four groups of girl scouts from Troop 3647 took all the top spots on the Beginner course after getting a thorough introduction to orienteering from Caroline Sandbo. The Advanced Beginner course was dominated by GrizO Youth Team members, with Mox Anderson narrowly edging out Kelli Fry, Isaac Jones and Elijah, and the three Johnson brothers.

Kelli's dad Kelsey, a first-time orienteer, was fastest on the Intermediate course. Short Advanced was won by one of the founding GrizO members, Kat Franchino. Making the long drive from Seattle, Cascade Orienteering Club's Ing Uhlin won the Advanced course. GrizO co-founder Boris Granovskiy swooped in late to take the Long Advanced win over Ben Brady and Siri Christopherson.

We had a great team of volunteers helping out today. Thanks to Chris Caldwell for designing and setting the courses, and Allison Brown and Siri Christopherson for directing the event! Many others helped out in various roles, including Caroline Sandbo, Ben Conley, Calvin Olson, Ben Brady, and Loy Koch.

See you in two weeks for our first Night event of the fall on the University of Montana campus: https://www.grizzlyorienteering.org/event-details/university-of-montana-halloween-night-o-1
